Christ Church has a long history of working with Brighton Center, Inc. to serve the low-income community. Brighton Center's mission is to create opportunities for individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency through education, and leadership throughout Northern Kentucky. Last year Brighton Center served over 60,000 individuals through 41 different services and programs.
Christ Church currently assists Brighton Center by adopting the food pantry in the month of September. Members are asked to bring in non-perishable food items, such as peanut butter, vegetables, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, cereal, canned tuna, beef stew, and spaghetti sauce to donate to Brighton Center. Items are stored in the Narthex during the month and taken to the Center and placed in their food pantry. Brighton Center sees about 300 families each month and assists with food, clothing, financial assistance, and medicine.
Christ Church also puts up a Jesse Tree each year in December. The Jesse Tree has tags on it with names of children and their wish for Christmas. Members choose an item and bring it back to the church by a designated date. The gifts are then dropped off at the agency and distributed to the families. We typically help over 100 children each year.
Christ Church members periodically help with sorting donated clothing at Brighton Center's clothes closet. These Saturday work days are planned in advance with sign up available during worship. In 2008, the Women's Circle adopted a room at the new Brighton Recovery Center for Women. They purchased items such as sheets, blankets, pillows, bath towels, shower curtain, and other items to complete a room in the residential program and then decorated that room.
The Community Connections group in Fort Thomas is made up of local churches, including Christ Church. This group has established a special fund to help families with financial assistance. Families in need must meet with a worker in Brighton Center's emergency assistance program to determine their need and to get additional help and resources.
